The Rhythm Gathering
What happens when hundreds or even thousands of people come together to create a single rhythm?
The Rhythm Gathering is a large-scale community participation event that transforms festivalgoers from spectators into creators. Bringing together schools, community groups, cultural organisations and the wider public, everyone is invited to contribute to one giant collaborative rhythm.
No musical experience is required. Bring a drum, shaker, bucket, cowbell, homemade instrument or simply your hands and voice. Guided by simple rhythms and interactive facilitation, individual sounds combine into something much larger: a shared musical experience created by the community itself.
Inspired by rhythm traditions found across cultures around the world, The Rhythm Gathering celebrates the idea that every person has something to contribute. Strangers become collaborators, individuals become part of something bigger, and diverse communities find common ground through a language that requires no translation.
Led by Alex Salvador, whose community rhythm events have connected people across ages, cultures and backgrounds for more than two decades, this uplifting experience creates a powerful sense of belonging and shared achievement.
As the rhythms build and spread across the space, participants become part of a collective heartbeat—a living expression of community.

Please note this is a free event. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring their own chairs or picnic blankets as seating will be limited.Participants are encouraged to attend one of two free workshops before the event to learn the rhythms and build confidence ahead of this uplifting community music experience. Attendance is not compulsory, but workshop registrations are essential.
CALL OUT FOR COMMUNITY GROUPS
Community groups that incorporate drums or percussion into their performances are invited to play a special featured role in The Rhythm Gathering. We welcome expressions of interest from cultural and community ensembles, including Pacific Islander log drummers, African drumming groups, Brazilian percussion ensembles, pipe and drum bands, Torres Strait Islander groups, Japanese taiko ensembles and other percussion-based traditions.
